Spot cleaning
Soil or stain?
In the carpet industry there are two terms that are often misused, soil and stain. Soil in the carpet cleaning industry is defined as "almost anything which gets onto a finished textile carpet or upholstered item in the wrong place and can be seen". Soils can be liquids, solids or a combination of both. Soils get into the fibers but can be easily removed with a vacuum.
Stains come in two forms, a common stain is a chemical stain. a common stain occurs from food, dirt or oily substances that make contact with with carpet. These spots are usually visible immediately and with appropriate action taken, they can be removed without damage to the carpet.
Chemical stains are far worse than common stains and can often permanently discolor carpet and upholstery. Often nothing can be done to restore a chemical stain.

Carpet spotting advise
Spots are one of the biggest concerns people have about their carpets. While it is true that not every spot can be removed, often some simple steps can be take to increase chances of removal.
* Watch for spots. in most cases the sooner you can attempt to remove the spot the better
* Never scrub a spot. This is more likely to set the spot than to remove it, and it can damage your carpet fibers in the process.
* Don't automatically reach for off the shelf carpet spotters. Some spotters will leave residue behind that will attract more dirt to the area. Mix 3 cups of cold water with 1 cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mix on a white towel and dab the spot until removed. again, please do not scrub the spot. If the spot won't come out, make a note of what caused it, so that on the next visit your carpet cleaner is able to decide which processes to use to attempt removal of the spot. |
